2024 Programmer Statement

2024 is a year we occupy the in-between spaces.

We start with now, then while moving forward, the past is remembered. A home is built before your eyes, unfurling magical secrets, ever-expanding towards the inevitable. Is age a feeling? A sword slung at an invisible foe, as Miles' own reflection bounces up from the floor. In this liminal space, the process becomes exposed.

The raw materials of creativity are on display in many works this year, from Trajal Harrell's emotionally virtuosic Dancer of the Year, a deeply personal exploration of his identity as "dancer" to Sonia Hughes’ I am from Reykjavik where she rebuilds a shelter in a different neighbourhood while always creating new context. We are taking up SPACE.

The momentum is tidal, rushing forward, expanding into the crevices and beyond. We're dancing, we're resting, we're spinning 360, we're singing, we're signing ASL. We are building an Aki Gitigaan (Earth Garden) and all are welcome.
