Ot Izvora - Bulgarian Folk Music Choir

Through funding from the Toronto Arts Council, a Bulgarian women's folk choir was created in 2013 for the purpose of participating in the annual Bulgarian Arts Festival in Toronto. As a result of this opportunity, and strongly motivated and moved by the beauty and richness of Bulgarian traditional music, a number of women created a new group, "Ot Izvora" (From the Source), that is directed by Dr. Irene Markoff with the assistance of Sonia Kiriakova."Ot Izvora" rehearses weekly with great enthusiasm and performs at Bulgarian and Canadian events. At the group’s performances, audiences can experience the captivating vocal styles, intricate ornamentation, and rhythmic charm of authentic and arranged songs from Bulgaria’s diverse ethnographic regions performed a cappella or with instrumental accompaniment.
